Pendant son mandat, MongoDB est devenu la base de données NoSQL la plus populaire en termes d'utilisateurs. Avant MongoDB, Max a passé plus de sept ans chez MarkLogic, fournisseur d'une base de données pour les informations non structurées, où il a joué divers rôles de direction, notamment celui de directeur de l'exploitation. Avant MarkLogic, Max a passé neuf ans chez Oracle, où il a occupé plusieurs rôles, notamment celui d'architecte d'applications en chef et de vice-président des applications de commerce électronique et de libre-service.
Max a été directeur non exécutif de Cray Inc, la société de superordinateurs, jusqu'à son acquisition en 2019 par HPE. Il a fréquenté l'Université de Californie, Berkeley, où il a étudié les mathématiques.
